Your periods still show up. Your bloodwork came back normal. And yet you do not feel like yourself. Here is the part no one tells you: perimenopause often begins while your cycles are still regular, sometimes in your late thirties. These are nine of the signs.
1. Sleep that breaks in the small hours
You fall asleep fine, then you are wide awake at 3am for no clear reason, night after night.
2. A shorter fuse and a lower mood
Things that never used to bother you suddenly do, or a flatness settles in that is hard to name.
3. Brain fog and word-finding pauses
You walk into a room and forget why, or the word is right there and will not come.
4. New anxiety or feeling easily overwhelmed
A low buzz of worry, or a sense that ordinary days are suddenly too much.
5. Changes in your cycle, even subtle ones
Shorter, longer, heavier, lighter, or just less predictable than your body used to be.
6. Hot flashes and night sweats
The wave of heat, often arriving later in the transition, sometimes waking you soaked.
7. Lower libido and vaginal dryness
Desire dips, and changing tissue can make intimacy less comfortable than it was.
8. Joint aches and shifts in your body
New stiffness, or weight that quietly settles differently around the middle.
9. Simply not feeling like yourself
The hardest one to put into words, and the one almost everyone names first.
There are 34 in total, and they travel in clusters
These nine are the loud early ones. There are 34 recognized signs, and they group into clusters that tend to move together, which is exactly why it can feel like everything is happening at once. The full checklist to see your whole picture, the clusters explained, a tracker, and the stage-by-stage timeline are in the free guide.
The transition has stages. Most symptoms show up in the perimenopause years, well before the final period.
